Solicitor Adelle Banks of Hudgell & Partners has been successful in an urgent application for a Forced Genital Mutilation Protection Order which was made out of hours in the High Court last night (22.7.15) the first of its kind in London. Forced Genital Mutilation is a real and serious issue in England and the brand new provisions to deal with it are a welcome development to protect women and girls. The Provisions of the Serious Crime Act 2015 relating to Female Genital Mutilation Protection Orders came into force on the 17th July 2015 which contains the all-important provisions to protect a girl against the commission of a genital mutilation offence, or protect a girl against whom a FGM offence has been committed.
In this case the mother was referred to the HER Centre (a Women’s Charity in Greenwich) for advice and support when ceremonial robes arrived from Nigeria with instructions to prepare the girls to travel for the procedue. Navie the mothers IDVA at the HER Centre immediately contacted Adelle Banks the specialist solicitor at Hudgell & Partners Solicitors who within hours made the application for the order. The Instructed barrister was Zimran Grant at Garden Court North Chambers.
The key to ensuring that the rights and the safety of women and girls are protected is community and grass roots intervention and strong community agency partnerships; we simply can not detect the need for help and support from behind a desk. Working with that ethos we have developed our legal and support services for women and girls accordingly and in partnership with local agencies.
